Class 3 is a mixed-age Year 2 and Year 3 class, taught by Mr Powell and supported by Mrs Canning. The main focus of each and every day is to make the curriculum fun, and challenge children to achieve their best in a safe and supportive environment. Lessons are made stimulating and interesting and target pupil’s personal needs for learning.
The organisation of the class, the approach and expectation to children’s learning is personalised to allow children to reach their full potential not only academically but also socially, emotionally and spiritually.
During the mornings the Year 2 and Year 3 children are taught separately, with Year 2 children being taught by Mrs Webster and the Year 3 children by Mr Powell.
Mornings are dedicated to English and Mathematics. We are at a very exciting period with English as the whole school is embarking on the Read Write Inc program. This is an all encompassing program including systematic phonics, reading and writing which is aimed at the children’s individual requirements in their learning. Children who have completed the Read Write Inc. program will undergo English lessons which are related to the class topic, which enables the children to develop a range of skills and a real purpose for their writing.
In Mathematics children are challenged to discover the ‘magic of numbers’ which is done through a practical ‘hands on’ approach and where possible relating it to children’s life experiences.
Children are tested weekly in times tables to give them a secure foundation before they move on to Class 4.
As the children become more independent in their own learning we encourage them to reflect upon and evaluate their own work, as well as think about what steps they need to take for further improvement.
Afternoons are made available for the remainder of the curriculum with children studying a wide range of interesting subjects which are often linked to the class topic. These include Science, History, Geography, ICT, RE, Art, Design and Technology, Philosophy, Music, PE and Games. Learning in Class 3 is also enriched by frequent trips to places of interest to support the topics, and visits from specialists and members of the local community to talk about their own interests and experiences. We find that in this way, the topics become more meaningful and inspirational for the children.
ICT as a tool for learning is incorporated throughout all subjects as it can provide stimulation and access for all children to reach their objective.
The children also have an opportunity to learn the recorder and sing on Monday afternoons with Mrs Daniel.
Class 3 follow a varied games and P.E. programme which includes swimming, netball, hockey, tag rugby, football, rounders, cricket, cross-country running, orienteering, gymnastics and dance. Children usually have the opportunity to represent our school at different festivals and competitive events during the school year.
Mr Powell is responsible for PE.
